Finding People Like You

The 9-5 grind can sometimes put major limitations on your ability to meet new people. Whether you desire romantic connections, need a new scene, or just want to find other people who share your passion for flower arranging, the Internet can provide a safe and exciting way to safely build new relationships.

Meetro is an innovative proximity based instant message service that dares to try and connect people within the same physical area. It is a freely downloadable instant messaging client, as well as a real time social networking application that is uniquely location aware. It detects a user’s own physical location and then tracts other users who are nearby. For those you getting concerned - don’t be. Meetro is a completely safe service as it only displays a user’s radial distance, and never his or her exact address or location. Conveniently, it supports AIM, MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo IM, so that a user is able to combine buddies from different clients into one singular platform to chat. Meetro is also a social network that allows you to create a personal profile just like Facebook or MySpace.

Another friendly site you can use to help you make real life friends is Meetup, which helps people find others who share their interest or cause, and form lasting, influential, local community groups. What sets Meetup apart from other social sites is that users regularly meet face to face. You can find different meetups by city, interest, or you can even start your own meetup! It’s a convenient, non-threatening way to connect to other people who share similar interests and live nearby. All the gatherings are off-line in person and can take place anywhere the group decides.

If you just want to browse around, Craigslist is a great place to start. You don’t have to join or sign up for anything. If you feel like putting up a post, there is not commitment or annoying emails that will follow. You can select your particular city and check out the community postings, personals, and even discussion forums. It’s a more open network than Meetro and Meetup, which could provide more opportunities for unsavory posts and sketchy propositions, but most of the time it’s just people like you.

If you really want to err on the side of caution, there is nothing wrong with doing a background check, especially if you are going to meet up with someone in person. Try PrivateEye for people search. It has the most comprehensive background search out there that will let you feel comfortable meeting your new friends in person!

Thanks for this! I was just talking with my husband the other day about how hard it is to meet people with similar interests as an adult. We’ll have to try this Meetup site you mention.

I agree. If you like to read, another place to meet people is at reading groups at bookstores and at the library. You’re all reading the same thing so you already have at least one thing in common.
