Now more than ever before, people find it hard to align themselves with a political party. Many people have been jaded by politics and feel that they don’t really have as much control over elections as our government leads us to believe. If you feel like 2008 is the year you want to get politically active, then the best way to start is to get educated. It’s still early enough to really follow the election from the beginning, and the information is very accessible.
If you head on over to Project Vote Smart, you can fill yourself in on candidates, their campaigns, and issue positions. They have in depth profiles with pictures of each candidate so you can put a face with that name you’ve been hearing about. You can even reacquaint yourself with basic electoral rules and procedures. It’s been a while since your high school government class, and everyone could use a refresher. Being familiar with terminology will keep you involved and interested in what happens during the election.
The popular news station NPR has a 24-Hour Program Stream, which lets you stay updated at any time of the day. This station will keep you updated on everything from the primaries to inauguration day. It will also keep you abreast of issues not related to the election, but current events, nonetheless. Keeping up with the news is important and will give you a better overall understanding of the election and the issues being discussed.
No matter what resources you use, get informed this year. The old adage is true, one person really can make a difference.
